Kagoshima Travel Guide: Sights, Food & When to Go

Kagoshima (鹿児島県) is a prefecture in the Kyushu region of Japan. Its capital is Kagoshima; it has a population of about 1.6 million and an area of 9,187 km². Sakurajima is an active volcano located directly across the bay from Kagoshima city.

Kagoshima sits at Kyushu's southern tip, dominated by Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, whose ash occasionally drifts directly over the nearby capital city just a few kilometers across the bay. Chiran preserves a row of Edo-period samurai gardens and also served as a base for kamikaze pilots in the final months of World War II, commemorated at a dedicated peace museum. Ibusuki is famous for naturally heated black sand baths on its beach, a distinctive alternative to conventional onsen bathing. The prefecture also administers Yakushima, a subtropical island with ancient cedar forests, including trees thought to be over a thousand years old, that inspired the setting of the animated film Princess Mononoke.
