Fukui Travel Guide: Sights, Food & When to Go

Fukui (福井県) is a prefecture in the Chubu region of Japan. Its capital is Fukui; it has a population of about 0.7 million and an area of 4,191 km². Fukui is one of Japan's most important dinosaur fossil regions.

Fukui faces the Sea of Japan between Ishikawa and Kyoto, known internationally for one of the world's richest dinosaur fossil sites, now the centerpiece of a major museum in Katsuyama, as well as for Eihei-ji, one of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244 amid cedar forests. The Tojinbo cliffs, dramatic basalt formations battered by the Sea of Japan, are among the prefecture's best-known natural landmarks. Fukui's crab harvest, particularly the prized Echizen crab, is considered among the finest in Japan. Historically overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Fukui remains one of the least visited prefectures by international tourists despite its notable sites.
